Gutenberg has released with WordPress 5.0 Update. Gutenburg is a highly debated and arguably futuristic editor which makes it easy to build post and pages using drag and drop blocks
WordPress makes it easy for us to disable the Gutenberg editor and return back to using the classic editor. For that, you have to install & activate the Classic Editor plugin.
Classic Editor restores the previous Edit Post screen and makes it possible to use the WordPress plugins that extend it, add old-style meta boxes, or otherwise depend on the previous editor.

While you disable Gutenberg, you have two different ways to choose:
- Completely Removes Gutenberg and Use Classic Editor
- Switch between Gutenberg & the classic editor
Completely Removes Gutenberg
removing Gutenburg Completely is the default option. When you activate the Classic Editor plugin, Gutenberg will be disabled. All of the post and page edit screens will look like as they are in WordPress 4.9 and below. That’s it!
Switch Between Gutenberg and Classic Editor
If you want to use both editors, May be you’re learning Gutenberg, Then, this is a great option.
- Go to Settings > Writing, and here look for “Classic editor settings.”
- Check the box “Do not replace the editor.”
- Save Changes
Steps to Revert back to Classic Editor
Let’s see how you can revert back to Classic WordPress editing experience.
Follow the following basic steps to install the Classic Editor plugin and select the plugins’ settings that is suitable for your editing needs.
1. Search and Install the Classic Editor Plugin from the WordPress Plugin Directory.
You can also see that Classic Editor plugin is listed in the Featured tab of the WordPress plugins directory.
Activate plugin, once it is installed.
2. Go to the Settings -> Writing or You can click on the settings link under the installed Classic Editor plugin listing.
3. Here plugin allows you to choose the Default editor for all users, where you can choose “Classic Editor” to revert back to the old WordPress editor.
You can change this setting back to the Block Editor anytime when you’re ready for the Gutenberg.
You can also let other users on the WordPress website to switch between editors. This can be useful for blogs having multiple authors, where some authors might want to work using the Gutenberg.
4. That’s all to revert back to the classic editing experience on your WordPress blog or website.
Go and Edit any Page or post and here you should see the old and friendly editor.
